October 18, 2002

Last night was a study in the highs and lows of life.

First, my honeygirl came to get me from work, and we went to get some sushi and dumplings. (high)

Then, we got back to my place and she told me that she got something in the mail for me. (high)

So, we settled in to watch the 100% dyke made porn(Jackie Strano and Shar Rednour---I highly recommend anything they are involved in because they are extremely funny and literate and still hot and sexy. I would link to something but unfortunately my computer at work now has filters. Harrumph.)

It was really good, really funny, really sexy.(high)

Then it was time to go to the Pub to see SAHARA HOTNIGHTS. We had been looking forward to this show ever since the review in Giant Robot magazine which said they sounded like a cross between Joan Jett and the Scorpions. My honeygirl was especially excited because those two shows were the hilights of her summer, and it was going to be some sort of mystical crosshatchery.

So we made our way down, and got to the door, and paid our $10 each, and then Joel said "You know one of the bands cancelled, don't you?"

"No, who was it?"(hoping it was the New Alcindors, the local openers who annoy me.)

"The Chick band. They refused to play because it is a strip club."

(low. low. low. low. low.)

So we took our $20 back and went to gooskis for a beer. We had a hard time figuring out at whom we should be pissed. In the end, we were pissed at the band, because 1)it wasn't like there were going to be girls dancing half naked while they played, and 2)if they have such a problem with the exploitation of women, why all the lipgloss and tight leather outfits?

I guess you have to pick your battles, and I guess they are pretty young and young feminists often tend to be reactionary. I can not expect everyone to be as postfeminist as myself. I am definitely of the mind that if a woman can get a hundred bucks out of a man for 20 minutes of gyrating, more power to her. I might even be inclined to say that the man's horndoggery is being more exploited, but I am not going to pursue that. I just think it was a dumb idea to disappoint a bunch of potential fans in order to make some sort of point which is going to fall on very deaf ears. I mean, they were still charging $10 at the door. The club is not going to make any less money because they chose not to play.

Argh. I always get so frustrated when I have to think about these larger social issues.
