Excuse me a moment while I get really pissed off at Christians. disclaimer: I KNOW all Christians aren't like this. Some of my best friends are Christians. Some(well, one) of my best friends are almost PRIESTS. However. First there was the whole thing where those BEARERS OF THE LIGHT, operation rescue, were sending letters to abortion clinics containing some sort of white powder and saying: "You have been exposed to anthrax. We will kill you." Charming. I did not get too bent out of shape about it at the time, because it had been a while since I had had cause to be really pissed off at Christians and so it just seemed like par for the course. What has me all cheesed off this morning , however, are the Christians who go out of their way to search out Hare Krishna websites in order to "bear witness." Specifically, there seem to be a category of person who have been searching out Hare Krishna websites in the last three days in order to tell all the HEATHENS how sad it is that a great man like George Harrison never discovered that Jesus Christ is the only way into heaven and now thanks to their heathen preaching of filthy eastern ways(anyone who can reference that quote gets a cookie!) he will have to go to hell. Pardon me, but don't you have anything better to do with your time? Couldn't you be feeding the poor, or washing someone's feet(metaphorically, of course) or loving your neighbor as yourself?(again, metaphorically) I do not think it is wrongheaded to hold the BELIEF that someone will not get into heaven because they do not believe the same thing you do. That is sort of the nature of religion, and that is the way that religion functions. But it just seems really out of control to sit down at a computer, SEARCH OUT a website which happens to mention George Harrison's love of chanting the maha-mantra(believe me, you don't just stumble upon this stuff while merrily praising Jesus, you have to REALLY LOOK FOR IT) and then post a page long message about how WRONG it is. George Harrison was more than just a Beatle to a lot of people. To a lot of people who are devotees of Krishna, he is considered a plainclothes bhakta(monk) who brought a message of peace and love and joy to a lot of people who would otherwise have thought that the whole shaved head and saffron robe deal was just too weird. A lot of people who are devotees of Krishna came to be that way because of George Harrison and his passing is a very sad event although it is comforting to know that he was conscious of God at his last moments and that he will be brought to a spiritual place, etc....BUT it doesn't really do anyone any good to read, in the spot where one might go to have some solace, that he and everyone else involved is just going to burn eternally . So, Christians, listen up. Cut it out. The thing about Americans who are currently devotees of Krishna is---the majority of them were brought up in your Christian churches and for whatever reason the message did not resonate with them. You really are not going to change anyone's mind by telling them they and all the people they care about are going to hell. In this modern age, fear tactics do not seem to hold much sway. Thank you for your time. By the way---yesterday I had a big breakfast, talked on the phone, did laundry, talked on the phone some more, watched LIFE OF BRIAN, and went to bed. The end. |
